Grade 1 Math (WCPSS): Building Numbers Using Tens and Ones

Video, Arts, Grade 1, Elementary,

The WCPSS Math Department produced this video to support teachers as they teach the unit Place Value in the Grade 1 math curriculum.

Building numbers is demonstrated and clearly explained using unifix cubes.  Cubes in sticks of ten and singles representing 2 digit numbers are counted to determine that number.  Also, a 2 digit number is given and then represented using the cubes.  First grade students will have difficulty with this concept if they do not understand that numbers are composed of tens and ones and that one ten represents 10 individual objects.
