Grade 1 Math (WCPSS): Commutative Property of Addition

Video, Math, Grade 1, Elementary,

The WCPSS Math Department has produced this video to support teachers as they teach the unit Addition and Subtraction in the grade 1 math curriculum.

The commutative property of addition, also known as Switch Partners, help students realize that the order of addends does not change the sum in an addition equation.  The commutative property helps students see the relationship between numbers in an equation.  First grade students do not need to focus on the formal term ‘commutative’.  However, knowing this concept can help students manipulate numbers to increase math fluency.  This video demonstrates the commutative property using the counting on method.  Several other means to show this property are mentioned.
